"Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."~ Margaret Mead

The Nelson Mandela Birthday Concert in Hyde Park

On Friday, June 27, the 46664 Concert was held in London’s Hyde Park to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday. Millions watched the concert from around the world and 46,664 were lucky enough to watch it in person.

A Global Camps Africa supporter from Austin, Texas was the winner of our drawing for two tickets to the event. Congratulations Jo!

Highlights from the concert will be shown on VH1 several times throughout the week of June 30. For the CNN write up on the concert, click here Review: Mandela factor makes musical magic

Nelson Mandela has been an extraordinary force for our generation and for future generations as well. He has a tremendous amount of forgiveness in his heart and an extraordinary love for humanity. We have been blessed and inspired by him.

For many years he has dedicated his life to the eradication of HIV/AIDS. In his words, “AIDS is not just a disease, it’s a human rights issue”. No child should have to suffer from HIV/AIDS.

In the spirit of Ubuntu (Zulu, for "human kindness"), thank you for your support of Global Camps Africa and our mission to help HIV/AIDS affected children in South Africa. If you have not been able to make a donation to Global Camps Africa this year, or wish to make an additional donation, we have a matching gift pledge of up to $46,664 from an anonymous donor who will match every dollar you donate. Please act today to help honor and celebrate Mr. Mandela’s birthday by helping fight the war on HIV/AIDS.

Donations can be made online by clicking DONATE NOW (above) or can be mailed to Global Camps Africa, 1606 Washington Plaza, Reston, VA 20190.

On behalf of all of the children that you have helped to attend camp and all of those children on the waiting lists that your gift will help send to camp, thank you.

Global Camps Africa provides a unique 10-day camp experience for children affected by HIV/AIDS in South Africa.

We must use every tool to stem the tide of HIV/AIDS. Prevention is the key. For every person who starts anti-retroviral treatment, six more become infected. That’s why HIV/AIDS education and life skills is so critical for these children.

Our first site, Camp Sizanani, is located at a site outside of Johannesburg in the Magaliesburg Mountain area. "Sizanani" is Zulu for "help each other". Six camps are held here each year for 10 days each. Boys' and girls' camps alternate, bringing together up to 130 children each time and 30-35 counselors. The children range from 10-15 years old and are largely from the Soweto area.

As word of the success of Camp Sizanani has spread, so has the demand for more camps for HIV/AIDS affected children. We are proud to announce that we have two new camps in partnership with two local nonprofits--one for orphans from rural, impoverished Limpopo Province; the other for youth from KwaZulu Natal, the province with the highest HIV/AIDS rate in South Africa.

Our children include city children from Soweto, youth from the semi-rural KwaZula Natal Province and poor orphans from Limpopo Province, many arriving with just the clothes on their backs and speaking a language different from any of the 11 official languages of South Africa. They all experience a wonderful time and gain the confidence and education to deal with the hand life has dealt them. We are changing lives and offering a them future.

We plan to have similar camps in other countries in Africa and the rest of the developing world. If you are an organization that is interested in partnering with Global Camps Africa and bringing us to your community, please contact us.
